Doctor Alan W. Arata
Professor of Biology and Physical Education

Doctor Alan W. Arata holds a B.S. in Engineering, an M.S. in Exercise Science and a Ph.D. in Biomechanics. The son of a swimmer and swim coach, Dr. Arata started his swimming career at the "very old" age of 15, but at age 17 won a High School State Championship. After a Division I collegiate swimming career, he competed in and later coached Modern Pentathlon (swimming, running, fencing, shooting and equestrian). Dr. Arata has coached at the NCAA Division I level in two different sports, netting four NCAA trophies. He currently consults in swimming and running and trained a U.S. pentathlete for the 2008 Olympics. He is the author of, The Parents Guide to Swimming, Innovative Stretchcord Training for Swimmers and several research articles. Dr. Arata is a retired Professor of Biology and Physical Education. In his spare time he likes to cycle, snowboard and play disc golf and can still be found training in the pool from time to time.

StrechCordz use vs. weight training? 4/15/2009 Hello Dr. Arata, Why would stretch cords be more beneficial than weight training for swimming? Is there a noticeable advantage? And how many stretch cord pulls should be done in place of weight training if it is more beneficial? Finally, would using stretch cords over weights be more beneficial for water polo?
